Ethiopia Credit Bureau Update Print
June 2011

Everything is going extremely well in Ethiopia! For those that don't know the extent of this project, very briefly Compuscan have been contracted by the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) to provide a fully functional Consumer and Business Credit Information Bureau, including the application, infrastructure, training and data migration strategies etc. The project has been running properly for just over a year but we are now at the end stages.

Compuscan’s project team have made multiple trips to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, and our training specialists made their first training trip last month. Currently we have staff members in Addis Ababa assisting the local technology partner on the infrastructure setup side. Compuscan’s development team have all been working extremely hard to create a system that we can be proud of in Ethiopia.

The bureau system is the first building block to provide financial institutions with modern tools to improve credit granting processes and it represents a significant step forward for the entire market in Ethiopia. It will provide factual and predictive credit information to the lending institutions which will consequently be able to extend more and more credit to both businesses and consumers. In addition, it will allow borrowers much easier access to financial products and more importantly it will provide the National Bank of Ethiopia with the tools and the information to monitor the credit market in Ethiopia. Watch this space!
